Shall We Dance, from the Rodgers and Hammerstein musical The King And I, debuted on Broadway in 1951 and in the movie version in 1956, with Deborah Kerr lip-synching Marni Nixon as she and Yul Brynner polka around the Siamese palace. This arrangement draws from the movie rendition, which ranks No. 54 on the American Film Institute's list of the top 100 movie songs. But don't play it in Bangkok. Thailand banned the movie (and a subsequent remake) not long after its release, based on the not entirely inaccurate assessment that it reflects poorly on the Brynner character, the real-life King Mongkut, great-great-grandfather of Thailand's current monarch. And they have pretty unpleasant laws regarding lese majeste for those who make fun of their kings.

The Sound of Music recounts the tale of Maria, a postulant sent to care for the seven children of widowed Captain von Trapp in pre-World War II Austria. Maria ends up falling love with the children and their father, choosing to leave the abbey and marry the captain. The family flees to Switzerland as the Nazis annex Austria. The Broadway production of “The Sound of Music” premiered in 1959, followed by a film adaptation in 1965.

The Processional and Canticle is from the wedding scene in the stage version of “The Sound of Music”. (The film score version is slightly different and shorter.) In the musical, this piece features a choir of nuns singing, along with the orchestra. This arrangement closely follows the stage production score and the 1959 original Broadway cast recording, which includes the Canticle section (which is not included in the film).

This piece can be shortened or lengthened as needed for a particular performance or event, making it ideal for any event that needs a processional or recessional.  There are also two options for ending the piece - a quiet, solemn ending or a reprise of the processional with bolder finish.

This favorite song from the musical Oklahoma is arranged in a lively, jazz-waltz style for brass Quintet.  While the off-beat rhythms may appear daunting at first, once the groove is established it is consitently used throughout the piece and becomes more comfortable for the musicians.  The melody gets passed around to all parts, but especially features the Horn and Trumpets.  This arrangement would be a fun up-beat addition to any program.

Here's a chirpy little song from Rodgers & Hammerstein's 1949 production of South Pacific, also mildly mashed up with another song, Bali Hai, from the same production. Lots of covers, from Ella Fitzgerald to a Brit punker who called himself Captain Sensible. (He was sensible enough to spend two weeks at the top of the UK singles list with his version in 1982.)
This song draws some criticism from the politically correct for its pidgin English lyric (it's sung by a Polynesian woman in the musical).
