By Jackie Wilson. By Berry Gordy and Billy Davis. Arranged by Joseph Hasper. Contemporary. Score and parts. 26 pages. Joseph Hasper #5033973. Published by Joseph Hasper (A0.734917).

Jackie Wilson's biggest hit made available for Little Big Band: vocal solo, 2 alto saxes, tenor sax, trombone, guitar, piano, bass, and drums. Optional section for a sax solo. Background vocals cued in the horn parts.

Key of D major. Includes a full score and complete set of parts.

Reet Petite (The Sweetest Girl in Town) (originally subtitled The Finest Girl You Ever Want to Meet) is a song made popular by Jackie Wilson. It was his first solo hit after leaving the Dominoes and, over the years, has become one of his biggest international chart successes.

The song was written by Berry Gordy, Gwen Gordy Fuqua, and Wilson's cousin Roquel Billy Davis (though credited under his pseudonym Tyran Carlo on the record) and produced by Dick Jacobs, and its title was taken from the Louis Jordan song Reet, Petite and Gone. It was Jackie Wilson's first recording as a solo artist. The song peaked at #62 on the Billboard Hot 100 in September 1957 and reached #6 on the UK Singles Chart. With the success of the song, Gordy was able to fund the launch of Motown Records.

The song was reissued in 1986 following the showing of a clay animation video on the BBC Two documentary series Arena. The video was directed by Giblets, a London-based animation studio. The reissued version proved so popular that in December 1986, almost three years after Wilson's death, the song became a No. 1 in the UK for four weeks (selling over 700,000 copies), some 29 years after its chart debut. -- Wikipedia

By The Beatles. By George Harrison. Arranged by John La Barbera. 20th Century,Broadway,Contest,Festival,Jazz,Musical/Show,Standards. Score and parts. 43 pages. Deaver Enterprises ASCAP #424574. Published by Deaver Enterprises ASCAP (A0.818198).

Big Band Jazz Ensemble Trumpet Feature This is an arrangement I did for Buddy Rich’s RCA “Stick It†recording which featured Lin Biviano. There is also a video of Charlie Davis performing it at a concert in London with Buddy’s band. It’s not an easy solo for the featured trumpet player but for those who haven the chops, I believe it will prove to be a real crowd pleaser. As with all of the new issues of the charts I’ve done for Buddy, I’ve added a 4th trombone part and have included a drum part. I’ve also written out a suggested bass part for ensembles that prefer to have that in the part. Electric bass is important to the overall sound of the piece but an amplified accoustic bass could suffice. Try to avoid the temptation to speed up the tempo and go with the suggested tempo markings.

Composed by Frank Loesser. Arranged by Des McNutty. Contemporary. Score and parts. 61 pages. Des Press #6888385. Published by Des Press (A0.977365).

If I Were a Bell is a song from the 1950 musical Guys and Dolls, based on Damon Runyan stories from Broadway in the prohibition era.

Sky, the thirsty gambler, takes straight-laced Salvationist Sarah to Havana for a bet. They drink a local milkshake with sugar and a little native flavouring

Sarah: What's the name of the flavouring?
Sky: Bacardi.
Sarah: Doesn't Bacardi have alcohol in it?
Sky: Oh, only enough to act as a preservative.
Sarah: You know, this would be a wonderful way to get children to drink milk!

After a couple of those, she bursts into song.

Doris Day had a Top-20 hit with If I Were a Bell in 1950 and many singers have covered it since. Its place as a Jazz Standard was cemented in 1956 on the album Relaxin' with The Miles Davis Quintet.

This original arrangement for big band features a solo flute - if not a flute solo - and, at 128 BPM, is slightly slower than usual. It was written in the mid-1990s for the Morley College Jazz Orchestra in London (then directed by Gordon BAP! Rose and Pete Pearl and Dean Moore). The style is in the direction of the understated West-Coast sound (Count Basie/Bill Russo/Bill Holman), with tipsy soli sections and a shout-chorus. The part for second alto OR first tenor is the same, meaning the flautist can be either an alto or tenor player.

Well, if I were a salad I know I'd be splashing my dressing.

Hic!

Introducing a slow, funky version of Little Drummer Boy that's very clever with the initial melody line played by bass trombone and bari sax. The tempo is 110 BPM, the chart has a soprano sax lead, and solo space for all saxes, trumpet 4, and trombones 1 and 2. The lead trumpet range is up to high A-flat. A very cool Gordon Goodwin chart! (2:28).

PROGRAM NOTES
Surrey With the Fringe on Top is a song from the 1943 Rodgers and Hammerstein musical “Oklahoma!”. It became a standard song among jazz musicians, especially after Miles Davis recorded it. There is a wonderful version recorded by saxophonist  Cannonball Adderly on his 1955 album “Cannonball Adderly With Strings”.

PERFORMANCE NOTES
Surrey With the Fringe on Top is a 32-bar AABA form in the key of concert B flat. In this arrangement, the A-section melody features several tongue-in-cheek grand pause moments. These are indicated by fermatas over quarter note rests. Have fun with these spots, varying the length of time you pause, which can done with a comical effect.

The solo section at bar 37 is open to any player, and a set of notes is provided for improvisation. The backgrounds at 41 are to be played each time, and the solo section can be repeated as necessary for additional solos.

The shout chorus at bar 47 should be played at full volume. Be sure to investigate and balance the chords among the wind instruments.  The shout chorus winds down with a call and response between the brass and saxes.

I hope you have fun with this classic tune!
