This arrangement for Young String Orchestra of the traditional Bell Carol is written in the key of D minor.   It is all bowed and is intended to move along at a pace of 112 beats per minute and runs about two minutes.   All parts have some notes that should be played détaché . The violins have the eighth note runs in the bridge section each time, requiring B naturals and C sharps.  Although the carol was composed by Mykola Leontovych in the early 1900's, it is based on a four note ostinato taken from ancient Ukranian folk sources.  The piano part is not necessary for performance but can be used to add rhythmic, melodic and harmonic reinforcement.  The .pdf parts file contains:  Score, 1st Violin, 2nd Violin, Viola, Cello, Double Bass, & Piano.

The First Nowell for string orchestra has been written for an advanced intermediate or good adult amateur orchestra.  The carol opens in the Key of G Major and presents a wonderful ostinato in the upper strings accompanied by the tune and harmonization of the carol by the lower strings.  It finally concludes after modulation, in the key of C Major.  The piece does present some divisi string parts in certain sections, and some third position passages for the First Violins as well. I recommend this arrangement to all conductors.  Please have a listen.

Found in several late-16th-century and early 17th-century sources and preserved at the University of Cambridge. Christmas and New Year texts were associated with the tune from as early as 1686. The tune is contained in several of Dowland’s lute manuscripts; in William Ballet’s Lute Book; in Sir John Hawkins’ transcripts of virginal music; in The Dancing Master; The Beggar’s Opera; and in many other books.  The earliest known source of the tune -Trinity College, Dublin ms. D. I.21, c. 1580 - known as William Ballet's lute book- gives the tune in the melodic minor scale.  Greensleeves is also often played in a natural minor scale and in the Dorian Mode.  This arrangement is inspired on the transcripts of virginal music from Sir John Hawkins’. The piece is appropriate for beginner students or amateurs and without any doubt very pleasant to listen when played by an experienced ensemble. Canada.  Research states that many of the buildings in Bastion Square were haunted by previous residents of the buildings in the area.  This composition is a typical march with First Violin parts ascending into third and fifth position.  However, whenever this happens in the part it is double by a lower First Violin part in case the upper part is a little too challenging.  The entire march ends with strains of Rule Brittania which I felt appropriate because Victoria is known in British Columbia, Canada as a little bit of England.
