The American composer and pianist Edward MacDowell (1860–1908) is rather unknown around here, even though he had his artistic roots in here: For he was trained as a pianist in Paris, Stuttgart, Wiesbaden, and Frankfurt. After his return to his home country, he worked as a teacher but was also director of the Boston Symphony Orchestra for eight years. During that time (1896) he composed 'Woodland Sketches' Op. 51 which is among the best-known of his piano compositions, especially the opening piece of his musical landscape paintings: 'To a wild rose' which is a simple, yet harmonically spiced melody full of peace and ease, without any technical tricks.

Composer Calixa Lavallee was a Canadian composer who lived from 1842-1891. Lavallee is probably best known as the composer of the Canadian National Anthem O Canada probably written about 1865. Lavallee spent most of his life in Canada but his last 10 years were spent in the United States at his home in Boston, Massachusetts.

Arbos was a great violinist, serving as concertmaster which included orchestras in Berlin and Boston. He was also quite an accomplished conductor. He conducted the premieres in Spain of Stravinsky's Rite of Spring and Strauss' Don Quixote. Arbos was a composer as well. Less known for this talent however, as you can see by this composition still very talented. This dance is full of his native flair, passion and fervor. This demands accomplished performers. Enjoy!

The American flautist Henry Clay Wysham was born in Baltimore. He played principal flute in the Baltimore and Boston Symphony Orchestra. As an author he published an essay on “The Evolution of the Boehm Flute� and composed a few pieces for the flute, including music for the alto flute with which he is shown in a well-known photograph dating from about 1895 in Adolph Goldberg’s ‘Portraits and biographies of outstanding flute virtuosos, dilettantes and composers’. He died in San Francisco. Chanson du soir is the first piece in the cycle Trois morceaux poétiques. Plate no. 25562 / published in 1894.

This gentle and tender arrangement for flute and piano has a flute range of low d to high e (with an option of going to high g). I doubled the length of the chorus since I love the Hosanna part of the hymn. My aim in arranging this was to create something that expressed the simple wonder and beauty of that Holy Night.
