Choral Choir (SA) - Level 2 - Digital Download

SKU: A0.1121346

Composed by Guy Gross and John Palmer. Arranged by Sandra Milliken. Christmas,Contemporary. Octavo. 8 pages. Sandra Milliken #722519. Published by Sandra Milliken (A0.1121346).

Christmas in Australia is the theme song from the animated, made-for-TV movie Blinky Bill’s White Christmas, a spin-off from the Blinky Bill children’s books (by Australian writer Dorothy Wall) and the Adventures of Blinky Bill TV series. The telemovie first aired on Australia’s Seven Network on Christmas Eve of 2005. In the movie the song was sung by Christine Anu, who also reprised it at Sydney’s 2007 Carols in the Domain. Weather-wise, Christmastime in Australia is very different from that in the Northern Hemisphere. Instead of cold, snow and spending time indoors, there’s lots of sunshine, lots of colour everywhere and lots to do in the great outdoors. This delightful song – Christmas in Australia – highlights the fact that, whilst these differences do exist, the true meaning of Christmas, the reasons for rejoicing, the coming together of friends and family, the excitement of children, the decorating, and the caring and sharing are the same the world over. For on this little world of ours, we’re all one family. So, come and join us as we sing, around the Christmas tree. Christmas in Australia deserves a place in the best of Australian Christmas songs. Unfortunately, it is not as widely known and performed as it should be; perhaps because the music has not been readily available. Hopefully these new arrangements for choirs and soloists may go some way towards redressing that situation. This arrangement is available in six versions – SATB, SSA and 2-Part for choirs; Low, medium and high voice for soloists/unison choirs. An instrumental accompaniment for Glockenspiel and string ensemble is also available separately.

Composer’s Note - Growing into me

On a particularly blustery Winter's day, I went to the National Arboretum in my home town of Canberra, Australia, with a bunch of very lovely kids from the Woden Valley Youth Choir (WVYC). Their director Alpha Gregory had asked me to come and do a composition workshop with the kids, to which I had replied with an enthusiastic YES!.

I'd done this kind of thing with WVYC before, but this time around I wanted to take it somehow to the next level, to give the piece a real sense of place, a specific and experiential connection to the local community or landscape, and the Arboretum seemed a natural choice for me for an inspirational excursion. I had a family connection to it myself at the time, my cousin Emma worked there and was very passionate about it. Also, it is an outdoorsy kind of place and I have such fond memories of outdoorsy exploratory kinds of activities filling my entire childhood, a very typically Canberran thing. I'm sure the WVYC kids have a similar experience and I hope they know how lucky they are!

So we put on our winter coats and scarves and hiked up the mountain, being sure to not only look at what was there, but also to listen, to touch, to smell. It was truly a multi sensory experience. Then we all went down to a local church hall and talked about what we saw and heard and smelt and the kids were just bursting with wonderful ideas for our new song. I've incorporated as many of their ideas as possible into the completed product, as well as my own over-arching theme; the oldest of the trees at the National Arboretum are only a couple of years older than some of the children in the group, so it seemed a nice parallel to make, their growing up alongside each other. It is my hope that the writing of this piece bonds these children to this important and magical place, so ripe with possibility, and that the connection is a lasting and meaningful one for them. It certainly will be for me.

Composed by Alan Bullard. Classical,Contemporary. Octavo. 8 pages. Colne Edition / BullardMusic #486230. Published by Colne Edition / BullardMusic (A0.879821).

The rainbow: sign of peace, sign of caring, sign of life, sign of the future.
During the COVID lockdown in Spring 2020, UK residents placed pictures of rainbows in their windows, and, every Thursday, came out to their doorsteps and applauded those in the medical profession who were working so hard to keep them safe. Written at that time, this song, to the composer's own words, reflects on the healing powers of the rainbow, symbol of the caring professions. This version is for SA (or unison voices) with piano - another version for SATB and piano is also available from this site.
The recording and the YouTube link are of the SATB version.

Alan Bullard’s choral works are performed worldwide, and many have been recorded and broadcast. He has a growing reputation for music that choirs enjoy performing, and which speaks directly to audiences.
The Colne Choral Series contains a range of Bullard’s pieces for adult and youth choirs of all types, including cantatas and choral suites as well as individual movements. For full details please visit www.colneedition.co.uk or www.alanbullard.co.uk.

Composer’s Note - Choosing Our Own Adventure

Canberra in the 1980s was a pretty fun place to be for a little kid. Well, i liked it. Playtime was very outdoorsy, with Lake Burley Griffin and other large tracts of bushland only twenty minutes from a nywhere, it was easy to be somewhere beautiful pretty quickly. There was lots of bike riding, roller skating, tree climbing, skipping stones on the water, and running through waist high piles of autumn leaves. The change of seasons is so colourfully vivid in Canberra, it just makes you want to be outside to taste it!

I’ve tried to capture that playfulness in this song which I dedicate to my big brother James with whom I spent so many of those childhood weekends. The name of the piece pays tribute to a series of books we loved to read, Choose Your Own Adventure.

This anthem tells the story of Mary and Joseph's journey to Bethlehem and reminds us of how they struggled to find a lodging place. With the flowing movement of Ballad of Bethlehem and hints of Greensleeves, the music and text gently prod us to open our doors to the strangers in this world and to make room in our hearts for Jesus. Appropriate for the season of Advent. Reproducible Congregation and Violin/Flute part included.
