Cantata 156 was written for the third Sunday after Epiphany in 1729, and was first performed on January 23 of that year. The text is by Picander, one of Bach's favorite librettists. of the four cantatas written by Bach for the feast (72, 73, 111 and 156), it was the last, and the only one scored for solo voice. Like Cantatas 73 and 111, it is a choral cantata, employing a choral melody in several movements. Cantata 156, in fact, employs two different melodies and choral texts in the second and sixth (final) movements, respectively; the second uses Machs mit mir, Gott, nach deiner Güt (Schein, 1628), which Herr, wie du willt, so schicks mit mir (Binemann, 1582) is reserved for the finale. This version of the piece was adapted for B♭ Bass Clarinet along with a piano accompaniment that comes with the product.

One of that set was called Roadside Inn, which I have arranged for Instrumental Solo with Piano Accompaniment. In keeping with the characteristics of the Romantic period my arrangement is full of contrasts and constant shifts between dynamics, articulations, and themes. I took themes and fragments of themes from the original and re-ordered them into a bit of a rondo form. There are interpretive marks in every measure making it a great piece for auditions to show your technique and interpretation. Not too difficult to play but sounds quite advanced when all details are observed. Another feature is the beautiful harmonic interplay between the solo and accompaniment. Tonality and tonal relationships are basic to sonata form, and in this sonatina, the tonal relationships within the movements are all based on seconds, while the second movement is in the relative major of the sonatina's home key. The first movement, Allegro appassionato, is a fairly strict sonata-allegro in F minor. The second movement, Adagio cantabile, is a theme and variations in Ab major. The finale, Allegretto giocoso, is an abridged sonata-rondo in F minor. The B episode is derived from the inverted second subject of the first movement.Although not obvious on casual listening, this provides a degree of thematic unity to  the composition.Grade 4+               Duration:7:40
