Charles Edward Duble was a tall, lanky trombone player who, as a circus band musician, was always seeking an opportunity to play a practical joke on someone. Duble's more serious side emerged when he composed for the many circus bands of the time time. Battle of the Winds can be a march, or it can be a battle among the wind players in the band. Duble's allegiance to the low brass gives the euphoniums, trombones, and tubas an edge at times, but the contest is fascinating from the introduction to the stinger at the end. Merle Evans and the Ringling Brothers and Barnum & Bailey's Circus Band performed it for years during their pre-game show.

He was  inspired to this piece during a visit with his wife Caroline at the lake Traunsee, where he observed dragon-flies flying on the water surface. It  premiered on 21 October 1866. The arrangement is kept in the original key of the composition for symphony orchestra and was commissioned  and first time performed by Mozarteum Wind Philharmonic Salzburg conducted by Hansjoerg Angerer at their Three Kings' Concert on 6  January 2018 in the Grosses Festspielhaus (Large Festival Hall) in Salzburg, Austria and broadcasted live by Austrian television. The groundbreaking video was the first to be aired on MTV Europe when the network launched on 1 August 1987. Among these composers was a young conductor/composer, named Gustav Westing III. The two of us found much in common with each other, including the fact that we were fraternity brothers. We continued to communicate with each other after the opera project, and became great friends, as well as sharing our music with each other for review and suggestions.Gustav told me one time that he was the Assistant Conductor of the AMERICAN PATRIOT WINDS in suburban Atlanta, and in the fall of 2015 called me with a commission to compose a piece for their spring 2016 concert. The result of this commission was A Festive Overture. The piece was composed to celebrate the joy of making music within a community.A Festive Overture was premiered on March 10, 2016 by the American Patriot Winds in Woodstock, Georgia.
