We Want To Play A Plena! It is a single-movement piece for the Symphony Youth Orchestra by Composer William Pagán-Pérez. The piece is in the key of D Major. Composer Pagán-Pérez followed some teachings organized in Volume I of the Suzuki Methods to compose the piece for the string sections and a 2 or 2.5 grade level for the wind and brass instruments. The key of D Major can be a challenge for the winds and brass (especially for clarinets and trumpets in Bb), but music teachers, conductors, and students will manage the challenges by practicing scales and arpeggios. The Plena is a music genre or a rhythm from the south of Puerto Rico (a territory of the United State in the Caribbean). Percussion students can learn the basic patterns by reading the music notation or by ear (it is very repetitive). Composer Pagán-Pérez used the Plena variation by percussionist Tony Sánchez, Sr. Instrumentation: Flute, Oboe, Clarinet in Bb, Bassoon, Horn in F, Trumpet in Bb 1, Trumpet in Bb 2, Trombone, Tuba, Cowbell (Small), Maracas, Conga Drums, Tenor Drums or Toms, Percussion (Bass Drum, Sus. This remarkably colorful part gives great pleasure with its liberation, colorfulness and originality of the Spanish and Cuban musical traditions.  Written in three-part form, this music in particular is notable for its peculiar rhythms and metric comparisons. If in the 1st and last parts I use quite recognizable percussion instruments such as: Triangle, Snare Drum, Castanets, Cymbals, Gong, which indicates more Spanish traditions in classical music, then in the middle part it is mostly Cuban folk music, colored and emphasized by such percussion as: Claves, Cowbell, Bongo and Conga Drums. Undoubtedly, the percussion instruments in this part of my transcription are a very recognizable element, but not the only one that can be determined with careful listening.

This piece is a celebration of my heritage and ancestry. By incorporating aspects of Palo music in a traditionally Euro-centric style of music I hope to expand the boundaries for what is possible in contemporary classical music as it reflects the eclectic collage of where I come from. I hope to specifically illuminate the underrepresented aspects of my identity in composition as it is those aspects that can create uniqueness and innovation in the long history and tradition classical music. 

Performing my music is a rebellious act. 

Centuries of composers have been misguided to dismiss the study of complex rhythm and groove as it is a subject associated with the music of Africa. Now with time and exhaustion of European principles we must look to the countries of Africa with reverence for our missing education on one of the vital ingredients of music. 

I hope you enjoy the kaleidoscope of colors and weaved rhythms that come together to make this piece come alive! 

This piece is dedicated to all the ancestors that came before me.

May I honor their lives with music.

Gonna Fly Now (Theme from Rocky) is the theme song from the movie Rocky (1976), composed by Bill Conti.  It combined a funky pop groove with a rock symphonic feel and was an instant hit, winning an oscar for Best original song in a film for that year.  The song became part of 1970s American popular culture after the film's main character and namesake Rocky Balboa as part of his daily training regime runs up the 72 stone steps leading to the entrance of the Philadelphia Museum of Art in Philadelphia and raises his arms in a victory pose, while the song plays, it's an iconic moment in film.
