Here’s an easy-going swing tune to feature your trombonists! This original from Aaron Hettinga features some nice soli section playing along with space for solos. There are plenty of texture changes around: tight high harmony, call & response, solo support, group articulations, great chances to showcase quartet section playing and provide opportunities to teach developing players about ABAC form and ensemble.While the top two bone parts can be a bit taxing in range (the lead part especially as it hangs around high C for the much of the last page), the lower parts are mostly straightforward for what’s found in Big Band swing charts.

I wrote this tune in the Locrian mode, which conveys a sad, surreal mood associated with self-isolation.  The coda brightens the mood with a change to Ionian (major) mode.Here are the lyrics:Wait It Out1.  I’m not having fun home alone. St. Matthew Blue portrays an unhappy person coping with the COVID 19 pandemic, which started early in the year 2020. It’s not a blues tune, however, so the word blue is in the title without the s. St. Matthew Blue contains unusual harmonies inspired by J. S. Bach’s opening chorus to the St. Matthew Passion. This tune doesn't match the profundity and appeal of Bach's chorus, but the two 16-bar themes of St. Matthew Blue contain some of my favorite harmonic ideas from Bach’s work.
