But when he came to making a complete draft of the music, he seems to have lost interest during Roderick Usher’s long monologue, even though he was setting his own text. As in No-ja-li he jumped to the next passage that interested him, in this case the exciting final melodrama and the collapse of the Usher house itself.In the process of completing the missing half of the score, I discovered that by reusing Debussy’s material for similar psychological situations across the opera, and by metamorphosing existing ideas (as Debussy does with Mélisande’s theme in his opera Pelléas et Mélisande), the only things I really needed to add were linking material and any passages where fast music was required. So the ‘nightmare scherzo’, and Lady Madeline’s escape from her coffin and her final bloody revenge on her brother are all mine, but most of the rest is existing Debussy in changing contexts (in which the Russian technique of ‘changing backgrounds’, both harmonic and textural, proved extremely useful, as it did to Debussy in his Prélude à l’après-midi d’un faune). Eventually, both my completed ballet No-ja-li and the House of Usher were successfully premiered in 2006 and the latter soon began to find its way into the established repertoire in Europe and the US. To further support this, I transcribed some of the highlights of Debussy’s score as A Night in the House of Usher for organ, and subsequently piano—with a focus on Scene 2 and the final, horrific and maca-bre melodrama. This climaxes in the double deaths of Roderick Usher and his Sister Madeline, together with the disintegration of the ill-fated House of Usher into the stagnant lake-all beneath a blood-red moon.In this form it was first performed by Ian Buckle in the Howard Assembly Rooms, Leeds in 2010.

This musical material originates from the same composer's early original setting of the carol Away in a Manger (also available via Sheet Music Plus), which uses the aforementioned harmonies to depict the rocking motion of Christ's crib. Therefore, this organ work is a 'meditation' on this, almost in the manner of a chorale prelude. The contrasting second section (later briefly alluded to before the final passage) is faster, in 7/8 metre, and is a series of permutations on a melody created by setting initial lines from Dylan Thomas's 'In My Craft or Sullen Art'. A central section features some military-like fanfare motifs and material from a projected setting of the Gloria. The second piece is based on a 7-bar ground bass (rising a minor third each time), that features considerable textural variation on each cycle, and culminates in a 3-part canon. The third piece explores the whole range of the piano in varied statements of a 10-bar semiquaver toccata theme, featuring canons and a superimposed scotch-snap theme. The fourth piece is cumulative, in four sections, and gradually descends in pitch by alternating hands in a minimalist build up of motifs, each followed by a chordal refrain. The fifth piece gradually builds up a right hand melody over various syncopated harmonies and appoggiaturas, before inverting the role of the hands. The sixth piece is a simple cycle of ascending repetitions of a 10-bar added-note chord sequence, with octave bass line, that rise by a perfect fifth each time. The seventh piece is a varied repetition of the opening movement (thus framing the cycle), with the initial chord sequence now arpeggiated, and with a fuller texture. It was specifically composed in memory of the composer's father, but the work can be used to the reflect any loss, or similar sentiment. The point of departure is the pounding repeated tones (the note D, for Death) at the start of the Lacrymosa of Benjamin Britten's Sinfonia da Requiem; a work which mourned the death of both its composer's parents. Throughout my In Memoriam, the repeated pedal note D is literally ever-present and obsessive, like the looming of death itself, and the percussion take a somewhat military role. The main melodic idea is a twelve-note theme stated at the beginning, though the music is not strictly serial. This theme undergoes various transformations and orchestrations, depicting the many facets of a character who essentially remains themself. More optimistic interludes feature woodwind solos, but the note D always remains. A passage of stark two-part counterpoint is followed by the disintegration of the main theme before a varied return of previous material. Then follows the inevitable dominance of the note D, in crescendo, before the work abruptly ends, frozen still. The work is highly accessible for both performers and audience. Fragment V is based on a 28-bar added-note chord sequence in a persistently syncopated rhythm. This pattern appears four-fold, each with cumulative variation. The initial sequence is purely harmonic, while the second cycle adds a simple bass line outlining cadences. The third appearance transforms the aforementioned bass line into a more scalic pattern. Following a sudden silence, the fourth cycle is curtailed and adds a simple melodic line in the treble part, before a final resolution.
