This arrangement was written for a particular performance occasion, and thus builds the original song out into a somewhat longer form (and with a few quirks of lyric underlap related to that occasion), so if you wanted to sing only the length as it appeared on TV, you can cut from bar 40 straight to bar 91.

Would it be some cricket singing crouched in the moss and barren ivy that the woodland, pitying, uses for shoes?

Would it be some fly on the hunt sounding its horn to ears that cannot hear the fanfare of hallali?

Would it be some beetle in irregular flight picking a bloody hair from his bald skull?

Or would it even be some spider embroidering half a yard of muslin to make a tie for this strangled neck?

It is the bell ringing against the walls of a town, below the horizon, and the carcass of a hanged man reddened by the setting sun.

The sparkling bravura piece was called an Etude in the first version of 1828. Two years later Mendelssohn wanted to present the work to the young piano virtuoso Delphine von Schauroth, whom he was courting at the time. He reworked it under the new title Rondo capriccioso, making it even more brilliant and adding a moving introductory adagio (thus described in a letter to Fanny). In this form, the work still presents all good pianists with a rewarding challenge. I did a bravoure piece for flute and orchestra respecting the Mendelssohn style.

Written just before the First World War, this flirtatious song anticipates that world where women were finding a new independence and power, and trying to work out what to do with it. On the one hand, the singer doesn’t want to be unfeminine by making the first move, on the other, she’s going to make a bid for what she wants. Go girl, is what I say.

This arrangement is suitable for performance in a barbershop contest, and the Southern Comfort Barber Gals won a bronze medal in the Holland Harmony 2009 chorus contest with this it. It is notated in the traditional clefs for women's barbershop: treble and bass alta (i.e. sung an octave higher than written)
