By Karen Peterson, CMP. By Karen Peterson, CMP. Arranged by Karen Peterson, CMP. Celtic,Folk,Historic,Instructional,Irish,Traditional. Lead Sheet / Fake Book. 170 pages. Karen Peterson #704871. Published by Karen Peterson (A0.1101496).

What makes modes different? When do you use them? How do you use them? Is this song in a mode?

This book is for everyone who has heard of modes and doesn’t know what to do next. Take advantage of how harpers use the same hand position for major and minor chords: change your levers or pedals to hear the differences between Lydian, Ionian, Mixolydian, Dorian, Aeolian, and Phrygian on the same strings.

  • * Learn the two or three essential chords at the foundation of each mode.
  • * Understand how to identify the mode or modes a piece is in.
  • * Experiment with exercises for improvising, composing, and arranging in each mode.
  • * Compare 40 color-coded pairs of scores in contrasting modes.
  • * Get lead sheets for 29 modal pieces from over a dozen nations.
  • * Add your own harmonies to 15 additional melodies.
  • * Find key signatures, scales, and chords for all the modes on a fully levered harp tuned in flats.
  • * Use simple graphics to visualize the music theory behind the modes.
  • * Practice segueing between modes and meters.

This book contains practical information for all musicians and is written especially for harpers. The scores are in keys from two sharps to three flats. They fall within the range of a 22-string harp starting with the lowest note of G below middle C. 161 pages.

By Various. By Various. Arranged by Chriss Scherer. Christmas. 35 pages. Chriss Scherer #913025. Published by Chriss Scherer (A0.1324817).

This collection of 33 songs was created to provide quartet arrangements for nearly any ensemble you can form. Mostly built in choral-style, all books are arranged in standard SATB voicing. The soprano part (top line) is always the melody. Because all books have all parts transposed, players can shift parts as desired to pass the melody around, regardless of the instrument mix. For example, have the tenor voice take the melody on the second time. The other voices can swap or move around to cover all the parts. The C book was the foundation for all the variation books. In some cases, parts have been shifted to eliminate a great number of ledger lines, but the chord structure is the same.

There are six books in the series: C Score (treble clef top, bass clef bottom), C treble clef, C bass clef, Bb treble clef, Eb treble clef, F treble clef.

This is the C Score version.

The current edition of Gabrieli's Aria Della Battaglia was transcribed for the modern orchestra wind section from the Canto Dialoghi Musicali de Diversi Eccelentissimi Autori: Venice 1590. The work is subtitled per sonare d'instrumenti da fiato (to be played by wind instruments) and is one in a long line of such descriptive works dating from the sixteenth century with no instrumental designation whatsoever. The popularity of this genre, however, did not fade with the close of the Renaissance. Rather, a rich development continued into the nineteenth century with Beethoven's Wellington's Victory, the so-called Battle Symphony, being a latter-day example.

Composed by Solage. Arranged by James M. Guthrie. Chamber,Contest,Early Music,Festival,Historic,Medieval. 12 pages. Jmsgu3 #863674. Published by jmsgu3 (A0.1271278).

Solage's Fumeux fume is a three-voice rondeau that is considered significant in music history for several reasons:

Experimental style: Fumeux fume is an example of Solage's experimental style, which linked text and music together in terms of form or meaning. The piece is known for its extravagantly chromatic sound, which was unusual for the time. It also contains some of the lowest tessitura vocal writing in any music of the period.

Cultural significance: Fumeux fume is about a Parisian literary coterie known as the Society of Fumeurs, or 'smokers'. The lyrics describe a smoker who smokes smoke and steeps his thoughts in smoke. The piece is significant because it provides insight into the cultural practices of the time and the role of smoking in society.

Musical subtilitas: Fumeux fume is also significant because it demonstrates Solage's musical subtilitas, or subtlety, in his tonal language. The piece is complex and requires careful analysis to fully understand its structure and meaning.

Overall, Solage's Fumeux fume is an important piece of music history because of its experimental style, cultural significance, and demonstration of Solage's musical subtilitas.

Composed by Giovvanni Gabrieli. Arranged by James M. Guthrie, ASCAP. Easter,Renaissance,Standards. 42 pages. Jmsgu3 #3457617. Published by jmsgu3 (A0.549196).

Giovanni Gabrieli: Jubilate Deo (Ch. 136). Instrumentation: 3 trombones, 3 euphoniums & 3 tubas. Duration: 3:00, cut time 4/2 at half-note = 96, 71 ms. Score: 24 pg. parts: 2 pg. Here is a stunningly beautiful example of Renaissance polyphony, and a mesmerizing fast-paced recital number. Program this either at the beginning to set an exciting mood or as an encore to leave the listeners in a jubilant afterglow. The parts are not difficult but plan to rehearse the many subtleties of dynamic contrast between the various sub-groups and the overall articulations.

Innovations

First of all, Gabrieli preferred sacred vocal and certainly instrumental music. Hence, he concentrated on music that consequently took advantage of resonance and likewise reverberation for maximum effect. Seems like Gabrieli may have invented dynamics – or was rather the first to indicate them such as in his Sonata Pian’ e Forte. Consequently, he was also a pioneer in spatial techniques. He therefore developed and used very specific notation to indicate instrumentation. Gabrieli experimented with assembling massive instrumental forces into isolated groups separated by space. In this way, he consequently contributed heavily to the Baroque Concertato style.

Polychoral Works

Gabrieli probably used the layout of the San Marco church for his experiments. This is because he worked there as a musician and composer. Furthermore, the church had two choir lofts facing each other. He certainly used these to create striking spatial effects between instrumental forces. Certainly, many of his works are composed such that a choir or instrumental group could first be heard on one side, then consequently followed by a response from the group on the other side. Sometimes there was probably a third group positioned near the main altar as well.

Spatial Music

Above all, Gabrieli studied carefully detailed groups of instruments and singers. Furthermore, it seems like he created precise directions for instrumentation in rather than two groups. The instruments, because they could be appropriately situated, could consequently be heard with perfect clearness at distant locations. As a result, arrangements that seem bizarre on paper, can in contrast sound perfectly in balance.

First Works

Finally, Gabrieli published his first motets along with his uncle Andrea's compositions in Concerti (1587). These compositions furthermore indicate considerable usage of dialogue and echo effects. Consequently, here we see low and high choirs with the variance between their ranges indicated by instrumental accompaniment. Seems like Gabrieli’s later motets Sacrae Symphoniae (1597) move away from close antiphony. In contrast, he moves towards not simply echoing the material but developing it through sequential choral entrances. Even more, he takes this procedure to the extreme in the Motet Omnes Gentes. Unlike earlier works, here the instruments are certainly an essential part of the presentation. Also, only parts marked: Capella are supposed to be sung.

Homophony

Hence, after 1605, Gabrieli moves to a much more homophonic style. He writes sections purely for instruments – which calls Sinfonia – and smaller sections for vocal soloists, accompanied by a basso continuo.

The national song of Gibraltar arranged for classical Brass Quintet.

The local anthem of this British colony was chosen as a result of a competition and officially adopted on October 18, 1994. It is sung every September 10 (Gibraltar National Day).

Gibraltar’s anthem is a good example of what an anthem should be, stirring and simple, while encapulating how natives and the world view the country.

The Gibraltar Anthem is the national song of the British overseas territory of Gibraltar.

In common with the United Kingdom, Crown dependencies and other British territories, the official national anthem of Gibraltar is God Save the Queen. The Gibraltar anthem is the national song, and was chosen in a competition in 1994. Both the lyrics and music were composed by Peter Emberley, who is not a Gibraltarian.

The anthem is sung every 10 September by the general public at the annual release of 30,000 red and white balloons on Gibraltar National Day.

Composed by Aaron Corley. 21st Century,Classical,New Age. Score. 3 pages. Transdimensional Music #909174. Published by Transdimensional Music (A0.1320692).

'Stumbling Fingers' is an atonal piano solo approximately 2:17 in duration.
Sometimes, I like to experiment with nontraditional composing methods. To create this piece, for example, I took the melodic rhythm of a well-known (public domain) work by another composer and changed each pitch using a twelve-sided die. I set the notes and C above middle C (C5) and then went up or down the scale in half-steps based on what I rolled. After a little tweaking, I added the accompaniment from another source (also well-known and in the public domain), 'Stumbling Fingers' is the end result.
