Brass Ensemble Trombone - Level 5 - Digital Download

SKU: A0.792083

Composed by Bach, J. S. Arranged by Sauer, Ralph. Baroque. Score and parts. 24 pages. Gordon Cherry #3382735. Published by Gordon Cherry (A0.792083).

Bach's Fantasia in G BWV 572 was most likely composed before 1712 and was originally for Organ. It survives thanks to his students who transcribed many of his works during the years before 1723.

The original work is in three movements, however in this setting Mr. Sauer has used the Grave central movement which is slow, dense and serious.

In this work Bach departs from his previous style of writing music that is interchangeable between the Organ and Harpsichord.

Mr. Sauer has done a masterful job of scoring this 5 voice work for an eight-part Trombone Ensemble of moderately advanced performers.

Composed by Frederik François Chopin (1810-1949). Arranged by James Strauss. Romantic Period. Score and parts. 33 pages. James Strauss #5806027. Published by James Strauss (A0.1035224).

Unless your name is Mozart, Mendelssohn or Korngold, the first compositional steps are always the hardest. Chopin was probably no older than 14 when he set to work on a set of variations for piano and flute. Already in love with opera, he decided on the happy- ending aria, Non più mesta (No longer sad) from Rossini’s opera Cinderella. As the curtain comes down, Cinderella gleefully warbles, No longer sad beside the fire shall I sit alone, singing; my long years of heartache were but a streak of lightning, a dream, a game. We are unsure what actually prompted Chopin to select this for his unique combination of flute and piano, but it was most likely written for the composer’s father who was a capable amateur flute player. In the end, the piece was probably dedicated to Józef Cichowski, a close friend of his fathers and an amateur flautist as well. We are indeed fortunate that this early piece of Chopin juvenilia has actually survived, as Jozef Nowakowski, one of the composer’s friends, kept the single manuscript copy as a memento. For one reason or another, the work did not appear in print until 1953. This charming and fluent set of variations presents the theme and four decorated versions of the original tune. Added triplet figuration enlivens the first variation, while the second relies on a florid bel canto style to embellish the theme. Rapid downward arpeggios propel variation three, and the concluding variant displays rapid staccato figuration. Stylistically, there is nothing in this composition to suggest Chopin’s hand. You certainly won’t hear Chopin’s fingerprint in the piano part, as all the interesting bits are given to the flute. In addition, it’s the only Chopin piano part that can comfortably be played by most amateurs. Clearly, the future poet of the piano had a long way to go! Here in a Flute and orchestra version.

Composed by Johann Sebastian Bach. Arranged by Justin M. Ryan. Baroque,Contemporary. Score. 3 pages. Justin M. Ryan #3033643. Published by Justin M. Ryan (A0.886908).

Cello Suite No. 3, BWV 1009: 2. Allemande.

The six Cello Suites, BWV 1007 to 1012, are suites for unaccompanied cello by Johann Sebastian Bach. They are some of the most frequently performed and recognizable solo compositions ever written for cello. Bach most likely composed them during the period 1717–23, when he served as a Kapellmeister in Köthen. The title of the Anna Magdalena Bach manuscript was Suites à Violoncello Solo senza Basso.

Now in the 21st century, this piece comes alive once again. Arranged for 2 cellos, each cello is playing the same piece in 2 different keys simultaneously(C Major and G Major). Enjoy Part 2 of this series.

Weihnachtsmesse (liturgisch). Composed by Marc-Antoine Charpentier. This edition: separate part. Eulenburg Orchestral Series. Downloadable, Individual part. Duration 20 minutes. Ernst Eulenburg & Co. GmbH - Digital #Q6103. Published by Ernst Eulenburg & Co. GmbH - Digital (S9.Q6103).

Latin.

Of the 11 surviving settings of the Mass by Charpentier, the present work, the Messe de minuit, is without doubt one of the most popular. Although Charpentier's Parisian career is quite well documented, little is known about the genesis and first performance of the Messe de minuit. It is likely, however, that it was commissioned by the Jesuits of the church of Saint-Louis (today, Saint-Paul-Saint-Louis) for whom Charpentier had been working as maître de musique since 1687. The Messe de minuit belongs to the tradition of the parody-mass for which Charpentier adapted 10 noëls - whose titles are given in the autograph MS - to the text of the ordinary and the resulting music is fresh, charming and jubilant.

Composed by Ernst Sachse. Arranged by Charles Vernon. Classical,Romantic Period. Score and part. 24 pages. Gordon Cherry #6520037. Published by Gordon Cherry (A0.811247).

Not much is known about the origins of the Concertino, except that the three-movement work was most likely first written and performed by E-flat Cornet in the mid-19th Century by Sachse himself. Since that time, the work has been edited for Trombone and Bass Trombone.

Along with the David Concertino, the two works are great examples of German Romantic solo writing for the brass family.

Charles Vernon has arranged an excellent sounding edition for Tuba and Piano of about 12 minutes in length for advanced performers.

Composed by Camille Saint-Saens. Arranged by Jean-Louis Couturier. Christian,Classical,Praise & Worship,Romantic Period,Sacred. Score and parts. 8 pages. Gordon Cherry #5296597. Published by Gordon Cherry (A0.811126).

O Salutaris (O, Saving Victim) composed in 1884 is the eighth movement of a series of Twenty Motets written for various vocal combinations from solo to eight-part choir, all with organ accompaniment. These were most likely written while the composer performed as a church organist.

Jean-Louis Couturier has transcribed the original (tenor and baritone voice) for Trombone Duo and organ and would be excellent for an Easter service or a serious occasion.

This work is appropriate for intermediate level performers.

Composed by Peter Ilyich Tchaikovsky. Arranged by Josef STASTNY. Contemporary,Romantic Period,Standards,Wedding. Score and parts. 19 pages. Josef STASTNY #4886063. Published by Josef STASTNY (A0.743660).

Andante cantabile (the 2nd movement from String Quartet No. 1 in D major Op. 11)

The melancholic second movement, which has become famous in its own right, was based on a folk song, likely the Song of the Volga Boatmen, the composer heard at his sister's house at Kamenka whistled by a house painter. When the quartet was performed at a tribute concert for Leo Tolstoy, the author was said to have been brought to tears by this movement:

Capriccio on the Departure of a Beloved Brother, BWV 992 is an early keyboard work by Johann Sebastian Bach, composed in 1704 when Bach was still a teenager. It is considered one of his few programmatic compositions, telling a specific story through music. The piece was likely written to bid farewell to Bach’s brother, Johann Jacob, who was leaving to serve as an oboist in the military.

Structure and Programmatic Elements:

The Capriccio is divided into six short movements, each with a descriptive title, narrating the emotional journey of the departure:

Arioso: Adagio – A friend tries to dissuade him from leaving
A gentle, expressive movement representing a friend’s attempt to persuade Johann Jacob to stay.
Andante – They picture the dangers that may befall him
This section evokes the imagined dangers and perils of travel, characterized by ominous, foreboding musical gestures.
Adagissimo – A lament of the friends
A sorrowful, slow lament, capturing the grief and sadness of those bidding farewell to the brother.
Aria di Postiglione – The postillion’s horn is heard
This movement imitates the sound of a post horn, as if signaling the brother’s imminent departure by coach, a common mode of travel in that period.
Fuga all’imitazione della cornetta di postiglione
A lively fugue that continues the imitation of the post horn, showcasing Bach’s contrapuntal skills even at this young age.
Aria – The friends’ farewell
The final movement brings the capriccio to a touching close as the friends say their last goodbye.
Style and Significance:

Musical Innovation: While Bach is typically known for abstract works, this early piece is unique for its use of vivid musical storytelling. Each movement serves a narrative function, making it one of the earliest examples of program music, where the music is designed to evoke specific images or emotions outside of purely musical ideas.
Youthful Playfulness: The Capriccio reveals the young Bach’s ability to blend humor, drama, and emotion. It also shows his developing mastery of counterpoint, which would later define his mature works.
Historical Context: Bach composed this piece at the beginning of his career, before his major positions in Weimar, Köthen, or Leipzig, making it an important insight into his early stylistic development.
This capriccio is an expressive and inventive work that balances emotional depth with technical brilliance. It stands out as a unique, personal piece within Bach’s extensive oeuvre, reflecting both a sense of farewell and a joyful exploration of musical ideas.

Composed by Francis Kayali. 20th Century,Contemporary. Octavo. 19 pages. Francis Kayali #6230277. Published by Francis Kayali (A0.973048).

The Gift to Sing is a poem by James Weldon Johnson (1871-1938) published in 1917. The central theme of the text is one of optimism and resilience, using the power of song – meaning, more broadly, art or any kind of artful, heightened expression – to overcome adversity. Although the poem can be interpreted broadly to pertain to any kind of struggle, it is likely that Johnson, as a civil-rights activist was alluding more specifically to the oppression African-Americans in the United States, a struggle that continues to this day, in 2020. I composed this setting in September of 2020, right after the Black Lives Matter protests that took place that summer, so current events played a role in this interpretation on my part as well.

If one reads the poem as pertaining the continued struggle of African Americans, some passages may come across as ambiguous. For instance, I brood not over the broken past should not be taken as suggesting that the horrors of the past should be forgotten, but as an injunction that the memory of these horrors should not discourage us or diminish our resolve to work toward overcoming the injustices.

The musical inspiration for the opening of the piece comes from the song Lonesome Valley, which starts with a pentatonic melodic gesture. The pentatonic scale is often used in African American Spirituals, Christian hymns, and folksongs (e.g., Swing Low, Sweet Chariot, Amazing Grace, How Can I Keep from Singing?, Red River Valley, Oh Shenandoah).

The more rhythmic parts take inspiration from the African-American spiritual tradition, as found for instance in the choral music of Moses Hogan (1957-2003). Meanwhile, the tenor solo at the end, is intended to be very loud, bright, and without the pronounced vibrato one would find in a Western operatic style. This kind of bright and intense vocal sound is not unfamiliar to most listeners, who may have encountered it in places as varied as Sacred Harp singing, the opening of the Lion King soundtrack, or the Muslim call to prayer.
