The main section of this arrangement, 'Another Day of Sun', is in the original key, designed for vocal and brass quintet. I was asked by two musicians friends, who had previously commissioned several Klezmer pieces from me, to write an arrangement of Hatikva (The Hope), the Israeli National Anthem for a visual visit to the Wailing Wall in Jerusalem to take place later this year.  Naphtali Herz Imber (1856-1909) wrote the poem in 1878.   Shmuel (Samuel) Cohen (1870-1940) first set Imber's poem to music in 1887, basing the melody for Hatikvah on La Mantovana, a 16th-century Italian song, composed by Giuseppe Cenci (Giuseppino del Biado) ca. 1600. In 1933, the 18th International Zionist Congress in Prague adopted Hatikva as the anthem of the Zionist movement.  With there establishment of the state of Israel in 1948, it was adopted unofficially as then national anthem of Israel, becoming finalized officially by the Knesset in 2004.  This arrangement for clarinet and cello shares the melody diplomatically between the two instruments.  The clarinet occasionally switches octaves for a slight Klezmer feeling (as was requested by the commissioner) while still maintaining the piece in a serious mode.

This miniature for bassoon and string orchestra was written as part of a multi-composer suite for the Delian Society based on the poetry of Paul Verlaine. It was premiered by Franck Leblois and the Octava Chamber Orchestra (the audio sample is the performance in question several years ago). The string parts are originally an arrangement of my choral setting of Gavin Ewart's poem Alcohol and the bassoon part completes it and makes it more French. The Verlaine quote comes from his Bonne Chanson collection in which he rejects the green fairy (absinthe) - arrière l'oubli qu'on cherche en des breuvages execrés - get thee behind me the forgetfulness we look for in these accursed drinks.

Phil Beaman #653686. Published by Phil Beaman (A0.1049315). Cecile Louise Chaminade (1857-1944) was a French Romantic composer and pianist. She is often overlooked as a musician yet she was the first female composer to win the Ordre National de la Legion d'Honneur, France's highest award. In 1890 she wrote a piano piece whimsically titled La Lisonjera (The Flatterer). It is a great example of late Romantic writing for the masses with an eye to publishing. She is lyrical, expressive, and emotional; using dynamics, wider note ranges, and chromaticism. It exhibits her trademark of being 'passionate yet virtuosic'. I have arranged La Lisonjera for Alto Flute and Piano, keeping all of the traditional Romantic characteristics intact. I have added greater contrast between the themes, making the A theme appassionata, and reserving her molto capriccioso for the B theme which I also slow down a bit to allow for more playfulness. It is my own interpretation of articulation and simplified virtuosic passages. The accompaniment is my own reduction to allow the solo to shine freely. The arrangement is still marked as Advanced Intermediate because the range is 2 1/2 octaves and there are many articulation markings. This arrangement is perfect for Recital and Repertoire as a performance of the 'overheated emotions' of the late Romantic era. Enough virtuosity to show the violinist's technique. Accessible and enjoyable for all audiences. (3:30 minutes; 2 without repeat) 6 page score, 3 page part.
