Composed by Gruber. Arranged by James M. Guthrie, ASCAP. Christmas. Score and part. 3 pages. Jmsgu3 #3387259. Published by jmsgu3 (A0.548494).

Silent Night arranged for Viola & Piano with new harmony for the final verse. Score: 2 pg. Part: 1 pg.

Silent Night

Origins

Father Joseph Mohr wrote the lyrics for a new Christmas Carol. He wanted the new carol for his Christmas Eve Mass. With only a couple of hours until the service, He asked organist and schoolteacher Franz Gruber to write a melody and simple accompaniment to go with the lyrics. The result is probably the most famous of all Christmas carols – Silent Night.

First Performance

Perhaps because the organ was undergoing repairs, or to make sure the accompaniment was easy enough, Mohr asked Gruber to write it for the guitar. Mohr played the guitar, and both Mohr and Gruber gave the world premiere performance at the Christmas Eve Mass in 1818 at St. Nicholas Church in Oberndorf in Salzburg.

Original Score

Eventually, the original score became lost, and consequently, Mohr's name was largely forgotten.  Though the public originally recognized Gruber as the composer, many people over time began rumors that a more famous composer was responsible. Thus, they floated the names of Haydn, Mozart, and even Beethoven. Authorities eventually settled the matter when a manuscript in Mohr’s handwriting turned up in 1820. Consequently, we learn that Mohr wrote the lyrics in 1816, and Gruber composed the melody in 1818.

Popularity

Nonetheless, Silent Night is still very popular. Singers have performed this song in nearly every genre and in multiple languages. Perhaps the most famous version is the one Bing Crosby crafted. This version is the third best-selling physical single recording in the history of recorded music. This particular recording was released in 1935 and sold at least 30 million copies.

Only two songs have ever sold more. Elton John released Candle in the Wind in 1997 and sold 33 million copies. The record for most copies ever sold goes to Bing Crosby. He released White Christmas in 1942 and sold 50 million physical copies.

Trumpet Duet Trumpet - Level 2 - Digital Download

SKU: A0.1088949

Composed by Eddie Lewis. Classical,Contemporary,Instructional. Score. 4 pages. Tiger Music #693161. Published by Tiger Music (A0.1088949).

Give your students something modern to work on. Joy, Joy, Everyone Is Flying trumpet duet uses a modern compositional technique. Joy, Joy Everyone Is Flying trumpet duet is actually part of my recent modern composition series. The idea was to see if I could write one of those compositions for trumpet duet with Trumpet Tyro limitations. Being composed from a nontraditional technique, Joy, Joy, Everyone Is Flying does not sound like the typical “do re mi†beginner band music. As an educational piece, it serves as a wonderful opportunity to expose the students to exotic sounds. The piece begins like a traditional imitative piece, but you soon hear a non-traditional modality. That modality is emphasized in the B section with grace notes that give it an eastern hint. Joy, Joy, Everyone Is Flying is a short duet, lasting under a minute. This is because it is written for students who were beginners only months ago. Other Duet Books I have published similar duets to this one in my two other duet books for this level. The first and most popular is Celebrations which has trumpet duets for all skill levels. The second, which has some of the Celebrations duets, is called Twenty Trumpet Tyro Duets. In the trumpet community we use duets as educational tools. They are a wonderful way to expose students to counterpoint, different harmonies and different rhythmic ideas. By including more of the modern duets in the easier duet books, the younger students have an opportunity to experience non-traditional music in what is essentially a chamber music environment. The Experimental Music Series I’ve published a number of these experimental works for trumpet and brass instrumentations. The newer ones were in response to the popularity of the fishing suites. I had gone years without writing any of these compositions and wanted to apply the techniques to trumpet trio. The fishing suites are a suite of suites, each suite being dedicated to a different composition technique. Of those three suites, Catch Suite is the one that uses the same technique as Joy, Joy, Everyone Is Flying. Other compositions utilizing this compositional technique include The Lotus Eater and Voice of the Prophets. SKILL LEVEL The skill level for Joy, Joy, Everyone Is Flying is Trumpet Tyro. Trumpet Tyro is the second of seven levels in our system. This is music for trumpet students with a range up to fourth space E. The music in this level is limited to three flats or sharps. We almost bumped this piece up into the Trumpet Player level because of all the accidentals, but eventually decided to keep it in the Trumpet Tyro level. Technically, the accidentals all fall within acceptable keys for this level, so we kept it at the lower level. That said, because it is non-traditional, it will take a little longer to learn. The melodic sounds will not come as readily as the traditional “do re mi†stuff. Practice Recommendations Listening to the recording is a very important part of learning something with new sounds. You want to be able to hear those sounds. Here’s an interesting bit of trivia for you… When I am using one of these original compositional techniques, I know when I’ve made a mistake because I can hear that it sounds different. I believe this is the sign of a technique that works. If there’s a mistake, the composer should be able to hear that there’s something wrong. Well, performing music that utilizes these sorts of non-traditional techniques goes far better when the performers can also hear the music that way.

Composed by Sholom Kalib. Children,Jewish. Octavo. 78 pages. Ayotte Custom Musical Engravings #2347255. Published by Ayotte Custom Musical Engravings (A0.733023).

When commissioning Rejoice and Sing it was our intention not only to have a concert work written for our Youth Chorale but also a work that would be an instrument in teaching Hassidism, for what better way is there to teach Hassidism than through its music. We also wanted to demonstrate that authentic Hassidic music can be arranged in a sophisticated musical manner without having to sacrifice the inherent folk nature and simplicity that is so indicative of Hassidic song. We were most fortunate in securing the talents of Sholom Kalib to carry out this project with us. Dr. Kalib from youth has been steeped with a unique blend of love and understanding of traditional Jewish music and a very high degree of general musicianship. He succeeded in turning these basically simple tunes into a highly inventive musical work without sacrificing the legitimate qualities of the material with which he was working. It is hoped that those using this arrangement will find the same degree of success that we have had in our many performances.

We wish to acknowledge with appreciation the following who made this work possible: Mr. and Mrs. Herbert Liebowitz of Dayton, Ohio who sponsored the commissioning of this work; Rabbi Jack Riemer, the board of directors and the members of Beth Abraham Synagogue, Dayton, Ohio for their support and help in many projects of the Youth Chorale; the devoted and hard working members of the Beth Abraham Youth Chorale who gave birth to this work and who, through their many unique accomplishments, have carried the message to their community and to communities throughout the United States that Jewish youth is indeed vibrant and very much alive.

It is our fervent hope and prayer that this work will be a significant addition to the great heritage of Hassidic music and that those who will utilize it will indeed have an opportunity to Rejoice and Sing.

The melodies included are:

SKU: IZ.PDP174

Composed by Verne Reynolds. Thomas Jöstlein. Score and Parts. 49 pages. Imagine Music - Digital #PDP174. Published by Imagine Music - Digital (IZ.PDP174).

9 x 12 inches.

Although Reynolds is best known for his contributions to the brass literature, especially that of the horn, he did compose several works for stringed instruments. There is an early Sonatina for Violin and Piano dating from his time at Cincinnati, as well as mature sonatas with piano for violin, viola, and cello. The Sonata for Viola and Piano was composed in 1999 and is characteristic of Reynolds' s later style, employing a rather complex harmonic language. The first movement includes an extensive unmetered passage and the third movement is a virtuoso tour de force-an exercise in perpetual motion for both performers. Reynolds stated that the pedaling in the piano part should be followed exactly as notated in order to create the timbres he wanted.

The first performance of the Sonata for Viola and Piano was presented by Melissa Matson, viola; and Barry Snyder, piano; on a recital in Kilbourn Hall at the Eastman School of Music, Rochester, NY, on 13 September 1999. I would like to thank Melissa Matson and Barry Snyder for their help in preparing this first publication of the Reynolds Sonata for Viola and Piano. No one knows this piece as intimately as these two virtuosi, and their input has been invaluable.

Many years ago I was on a judging panel to select winning song entries to mark the United Nations World Peace Celebration. I remember being quite disappointed in the majority of entries because the lyrics proceeded to list all the current world conflicts and their proposed solutions. It made for overly long, and ultimately boring, songs. I was haunted by those entries when I went home that night. I lied in bed and thought all I wanted to hear was.... Finally, at a sleepless 2 a.m., I got up and went to the piano and wrote this piece as a response to that. (That line from my tortured dream; all I ever wanted even made it into the song.).   I set it for TTBB voices to provide a closer, tighter harmony to indicate the brotherhood I was dreaming of. Its simplicity and extreme brevity are no doubt knee jerk reactions to the long, boring pieces I heard all day. This piece has been in my drawer for two decades because I thought it was too brief to be of any practical value for anyone, but all attempts I made to lengthen it seemed to spoil it. But it remains one of my favorite and most passionate pieces that I have written, so I have decided to post it 'as is' and let you creative types decide how to use it. Enjoy!. (recording is a simple piano reduction of the voice parts to show harmonies and progressions)

Lift Me Up is the lead single from the soundtrack album of the 2022 Marvel motion picture Black Panther: Wakanda Forever.

The song was written by Ludwig Göransson, Robyn Fenty (Rihanna), Ryan Coogler and Temilade Openiyi (Tems). It was intended as a tribute to the late Chadwick Boseman who played the title role of T'Challa (Black Panther) in the first of the Black Panther movies. Sadly, he died in August 2020. Speaking about the meaning and creative process for the song, Tems said, After speaking with Ryan and hearing his direction for the film and the song, I wanted to write something that portrays a warm embrace from all the people that I’ve lost in my life. I tried to imagine what it would feel like if I could sing to them now and express how much I miss them. Rihanna has been an inspiration to me so hearing her convey this song is a great honour.

Lift Me Up reached number one in Belgium, Hungary, Switzerland, and South Africa; number two on the US Billboard Hot 100 Chart; top five in Australia, the United Kingdom and France; and the top ten in various other countries.

This arrangement is available for SATB, SAB, SSA, SS (2-Part upper voices) and SA (2-Part original key) choirs, all with soloist and piano accompaniment.
