In 1849 Robert Schumann completed a set of Romantic character pieces for piano which he named Forest Scenes. One of that set was called Roadside Inn, which I have arranged for Instrumental Trio. In keeping with the characteristics of the Romantic period my arrangement is full of contrasts and constant shifts between dynamics, articulations, and themes. There are interpretive marks in every measure as each part independently adds to the stunning polyphonic weaving. Not too difficult to play but sounds quite advanced when all details are observed. A great piece to show your musicianship as a group. To be played warmly and with passion to welcome people to your Roadside Inn.

Handel's beloved Hallelujah Chorus sensitively arranged for a trio of double basses. Care was taken to capture the essence of Handel's writing whilst also keeping the music idiomatic to the double bass. Basses one and two are written entirely in treble and tenor clefs, respectively, as bass three remains in bass clef. There is plenty of thumb position work in the upper parts making the overall difficulty intermediate to early advanced. Excellent for studio recitals, Christmas parties and general practice. The Praeludium from Suite No 3 in A minor is originally for unaccompanied Cello solo by Max Reger (1873-1916, written 1914). For this unaccompanied duet arrangement the melody was creatively deconstructed into two parts that continuously interact as if each instrument is finishing the other's thoughts. The harmonies are inspired by the original double stops. The arrangement remains stylistically faithful to Reger's use of constantly shifting dynamics and ever-present expression marks. This 4 1/2 minute work is a worthy challenge for a serious concert or recital. A new approach to this Masterwork of the repertoire. A live performance will be considerably freer and more expressive than the temporary MIDI recording attached. Range - same note range for both parts which is a wide 2 1/2 octaves. 5 page score, 3 pages each part.

This is written in one broad movement for a Flute in C quartet. I wrote it because I love the flute and want to incorporate a theme and variations approach. Each terrace gets a little more involved with counterpoint, etc., in the tonal fabric, building up to a dramatic tension point and then a D.C. back to the beginning to hold it all together and come to a final cadence. It is loosely based and inspired by the Baroque dance suite approach, very freely using the drama, echoes, tensions and cadences, telling a story. It is motivated by universal human experiences in living life (the drama of the terrace dynamics), making the most of opportunities using available resources -- all that good stuff! The title page is a dramatic photo of the Northern Lights from Alaska showing terraces, starting with our earth and looking upwards to infinity. The audio clip is not a sample, but a MIDI rendition of the whole composition.
