An early fragment of this song appeared in Mike Nichols' 1967 hit film The Graduate. The following year the song was included in its finished form on Simon and Garfunkel's album Bookends.Despite Simon's intention to make it a tribute to traditional American heroes, it had already become synonymous with Anne Bancroft's married seductress of the film.
