'La Forza del Destino' is a product of the rich middle period of Verdi’s long creative life and marks an important development in his style. The entire work is pervaded by a dark brooding feeling. Verdi and librettist Francesco Maria Piave have created a tangled tale in which the characters come together through coincidence. Melitone and Preziosilla provide asides and comic elements as the three main characters Donna Leonora Don Carlo and Don Alvaro play out their tragic parts. This is the Schirmer Edition of the Vocal Score in the original Italian with an English translation by Ruth and Thomas Martin.
