According to the traditional interpretation the notebook was given to Wolfgang as a present on his seventh birthday Oct. 31st 1762 from his father Leopold. Wolfgang Plath writes in the preface to volume IX/27/1 of the Neue Mozart-Ausgabe (p.IX): 'The dedication inscription allegedly written by Leopold Mozart and dated 31. Oktober 1762 turned out to be a crude forgery. There remained an anomymous piano- and music-book from about 1750 of Central German provenance without any relationship to Mozart.'
