Tobias Matthay (1858-1945) was a British pianist  composer and pedagogue. He studied at the Royal Academy of Music  where he later taught from 1876-1925. In 1905 he opened his own Piano school  which remained highly popular until the outbreak of the Second World War. Principles Of Fingering And Laws Of Pedalling was first published in 1908  and is his fifth educational Piano work. It includes extracts from Muscular Relaxation Studies. Both were very successful  and influenced Piano technique and teaching methods throughout the English-speaking world.
