Par GRIEG EDVARD. Grieg’s Haugtussa Song Cycle Op. 67 is one of the masterpieces of his song oeuvre. It is 8 settings from the epic self-titled poem by Arne Garborg, about a shepherd girl. Known as ‘Haugtussa’ (‘hill troll girl’) due to her clairvoyance and deep connection to nature and mythical beings, she must overcome societal exclusion through courage and self-reflection. Grieg was not only fascinated by the natural mysticism
of this poem, but also by the musicality of the new Norwegian language Nynorsk, which he described as a ‘world of unborn music’. The edition presents the song cycle in its original form with Norwegian lyrics; the melodic inflection of this language shapes the distinctive character of the composition.
The work, scored for medium voice and piano, lasts around 26 minutes and is suitable for intermediate level singers. This edition was created in collaboration with Kode Bergen and the Haugtussa Collective and includes introductory texts, literal translations, and pronunciation guides. All songs are also available to download as audio files, both sung and spoken.
Griegs Haugtussa Liederzyklus op. 67 ist eines der Meisterwerke seines Liedschaffens. Es handelt sich um die Vertonung von acht Gedichten aus dem gleichnamigen Gedichtepos von Arne Garborg über ein Hirtenmädchen, das wegen ihrer Hellsichtigkeit sowie ihrer Verbindung zur Natur und zu mythischen Wesen „Haugtussa“ (Hügeltrollmädchen) genannt wird und das durch Mut und Selbstreflexion
ihrem ‚Anderssein‘ begegnet. Grieg war von der Naturmystik des Epos und von der Musikalität der neuen norwegischen Sprache Nynorsk begeistert, die er als eine „Welt an ungeborener Musik“ beschrieb. Die vorliegende Ausgabe präsentiert das Werk in der originalen Fassung mit norwegischem Liedtext, dessen Sprachmelodie der Komposition ihren unverwechselbaren Charakter verleiht.
Neben Werkeinführungen, Verständnisübersetzungen und Aussprachehilfen sind alle Lieder sowohl eingesungen als auch eingesprochen als Audiodateien im freien Download erhältlich.
