Inspired by a Russian folk tune he had heard sung by a house servant, the Andante Cantabile combines heartfelt simplicity with the composer’s gift for lyrical expansion. The movement soon took on a life of its own, admired by Tolstoy and later arranged by Tchaikovsky himself for cello and orchestra. In this version for flute, viola (or clarinet) and harp, the familiar song-like quality is preserved but set in a new light.
