Based on an original theme sketched in 2004, Three-Ring Wind-Up was composed in the summer of 2006 in response to the Dallas Wind SymphonyÕs annual call for fanfares. The work represents a departure from the composerÕs previous brass music: It is eclectic, jaunty, and brings together multiple musical languages within a brief three minutes. Included are an opening horn call, a sassy main theme with punchy responses, and a surprising fugato. The piece closes with a final Òwind-upÓ . . . and a familiar quotation to announce the beginning of a circus. Grade 4.
