Shifting harmonies in the stately but exciting opening introduce a lovely lyric theme. A gorgeous 8-measure Alto Sax solo (cued Tpt.) brings in a second, extended lyric theme which gradually develops beautiful counterpoint reminiscent of a Romantic serenade. Melvin Shelton's sensitive scoring makes this excellent concert and contest offering both accessible and worthwhile.
