Johann Strauss Jr. ("The Waltz King") , son of Johann Strauss Sr. , and brother of Josef and Eduard Strauss, was the most famous of the Strauss family. He was born on October 25th, 1825, in Vienna, and elevated the waltz from a lowly peasant dance to entertainment fit for the Habsburg court. Die Fledermaus premiered on April 5th, 1874, and has been a part of the regular operetta repertoire ever since. Johann Strauss Jr. died in Vienna on n June 3, 1899, and is buried in the Zentralfriedhof.
