The three sacred songs for solo voice and organ are connected to Dvorak's friend Alois Gobel (1841-1907), who was at the time a clerk at the estate of Prince Rohan residing in Sychrov Castle near Turnov. The pieces do not form a cycle, as they came about one by one in the years 1877-9 during Dvorak's summer visits to Sychrov, as incidental music for moments of private celebration with close friends and family. The publication is part of the first Complete Critical Edition of the Works of Antonin Dvorak. The Preface and Editor's Notes (Cz., Eng., Ger., Fr.) are written by Jarmil Burghauser and Antonin Cubr.
