O gladsome light is a setting of a wonderfully imaginative paraphrase of the Phos hilaron, written by Reverend Joseph Robinson. Composed for the Mississippi Conference on Music and Liturgy, this anthem is a fine addition to the Evensong service. It highlights both chorus and organ, yet is composed in a way that does not require a huge amount of rehearsal time. The music is varied, with intimate opening and closing sections that reflect the influence of chant, and a dramatic and colorful high point in the middle section.
