In the nineteenth century, few pieces rivaled the choral "Prayer" from Rossini's opera/oratorio Mose in Egitto (Moses in Egypt) in popularity. Hailed as "stunning," "powerful," and "haunting," Prayer was greeted with tumultuous applause at its premiere in 1820 and quickly appeared in many versions, including vocal quartet, marching band, violin solo, and piano. Over-performed, the piece vanished into obscurity in the twentieth century. We are excited to reintroduce the beautiful Prayer in a new edition that incorporates Rossini's original version in Italian, his revised French version, and an English version, all in a single publication. Rarely do choirs have the opportunity to sing sacred music originally written in Italian, not Latin. An audience favorite!
