Toccata (1971/1998) is modelled on the 17th century Baroque toccata with its alternation of virtuosity and dramatic pillars of harmony. The free-tonal melodies and harmony do, however, in this case observe different symmetries. Toccata was actually composed in 1971 but the composer produced a new version of it for the Hampstead and Highgate Festival in London in 1999.
