Robert Schumann composed his D-minor Symphony in 1841, just after completing his Symphony No. 1 in B flat major op. 38. This version remained unpublished during the composers lifetime. After a thorough revision in late 1851, the work was given its first performance in Dusseldorf on 3 March 1853 under the composers direction. It was published that same year by Breitkopf and Hartel under the opus number 120 as Symphony No. 4.
Die vorliegende Ausgabe folgt dem Notentext der von Clara Schumann in Zusammenarbeit mit Johannes Brahms u. a. zwischen 1879 und 1893 herausgegebenen Gesamtausgabe von Robert Schumanns Werken. Diese Edition ist von willkurlichen Veranderungen des Textes weitgehend frei. The present edition is based on the music text of the ,,Gesamtausgabe of Robert Schumann's works edited by Clara Schumann together with Johannes Brahms and others between 1879 und 1893. This publication is almost entirely free from arbitrary alterations in the text. Die vorliegende Ausgabe folgt dem Notentext der von Clara Schumann in Zusammenarbeit mit Johannes Brahms u. a. zwischen 1879 und 1893 herausgegebenen Gesamtausgabe von Robert Schumanns Werken.
