This setting spans several centuries; the text is an old Appalachian carol form Colonial times, based upon an american folktune of the 19th century clothed in 20th century dress by James Helme Sutcliffe. It is written for SATB chorus with brief solos for each voice and an accompaniment that is successful on either organ or piano.
