This extensive book includes all of Kuula's songs for concert use and e.g. four previously unpublished songs. This critical edition includes commentaries by Gustav Djupsjobacka, the editor of this collection. Toivo Kuula, who met an untimely death in 1918, composed songs which are among the finest of their kind ever composed in Finland. They perfectly reflect the serious mindscape, the richness of melody and underlying melancholy of the national soul. The broad, dynamic range of expression calls for a good vocal technique, a wide vocal span and considerable powers of interpretation.
