Inspired by tangos by Kurt Weill, Igor Stravinsky and Astor Piazzolla, Tango in Blue was composed on a long flight from New York to Montevideo as an impromptu gift to the National Orchestra of Uruguay. The composer also made versions for full orchestra, string quartet, saxophone quartet, and violin and piano.
