In the original score of the violin concerto György Ligeti challenges the interpreters of his work to invent their own solo cadenza.Thomas Adès gladly accepted this invitation and wrote a cadenza for the violinist Peter Heersthal in 2011. Adès adhered strictly to Ligeti's specifications and wrote a fast-paced solo piece that exploits melodic material from all five movements and from which the final orchestral coda emerges as an inevitable result.
