Goethe, who studied in Leipzig between 1765 and 1768 (a period he wrote about in Dichtung und Wahrheit), was friends there with a young man of his age, Bernhard Theodor Breitkopf, the grandson of the publishing house's founder. Breitkopf set his friend's first poems to music in the style of the day. The Neue Lieder und Melodien came out for the 1770 Leipzig spring fair, though without any mention of the poet, still completely unknown at that time. The title Goethes Leipziger Liederbuch dates only from 1932, when Gunter Raphael prepared a new edition for the Goethe commemorative year. Since several poems from the Neue Lieder are found in highly altered forms in later work collections, this publication of Goethe's first poems is also of great value to literary scholars.
