Nineteen of the 24 Preludes completed by Dmitri Shostakovich in 1933, representing short character pieces, were adapted for violin and piano during the 1930s by Dmitri Zyganov, long-time first violinist of the beethoven String Quartet and a friend of Shostakovich. In the present edition, the Preludes appear in the composer's original order, including the remaining five adapted by Lera Auerbach in the year 2000 in response to a commission from the violinist Grigory Kalinovsky.
