Ravel composed this work in 1914 just before he enlisted for service in World War I as part of Deux Melodies Hebraïques for voice and piano accompaniment. The two works were commissioned by Alvina Alvi a soprano with the St. Petersburg Opera, who performed them for the first time the same year with Ravel at the piano. The composer later orchestrated the music in 1919.
This work is about 5-minutes in length is modest in range (high g), in bass clef and appropriate for advanced performers.
