Hymn of the Highlands wurde als thematisches Stuck zur Prasentation der Solisten einer Brass Band in Auftrag gegeben. Philip Sparke loste diese Aufgabe meisterlich mit der Komposition in sieben Satzen, die fast alle einzeln erhaltlich sind und somit unterschiedlichen Programmanforderungen entsprechend in Suiten unterschiedlicher Lange zusammengestellt werden konnen. Das Werk zeichnet eindrucksvolle Bilder der schottischen Highlands und stellt dabei nacheinander Euphonium, Sopran-Cornet, Cornet, Flugelhorn, Es-Horn und Bariton ins Rampenlicht.
