The Quintet for Oboe and Strings was written in 1932. Soon afterwards it won a prize in the Daily Telegraph’s Chamber Music competition and was recorded for HMV records. She studied at the Royal College of Music with Ralph Vaughan Williams but continentalEuropean modernism proved to be a greater influence on her music; she admired both Bartok and Janacek.
