William Whittaker (1876-1944) was an English conductor composer and academic who produced many choral arrangements of English folk songs. Blow The Wind Southerly originated in his nativeNorthumberland and tells the story of a woman hoping for a southerly wind to blow her lover a sailor back home to her.
