One of Mathias's earliest pieces (written whilst he was still a student at the Royal Academy of Music in 1956) the Sonatina for clarinet and piano still displays many of the composer's inimitable fingerprints: the syncopated self-propelling rhythms eloquent lyricism and life-enhancing exuberance.
