This rich setting of an eighteenth-century poem for SATB and piano suggests the timeless calm of the night. Punctuated by tolling bells in the piano it builds to a grand climax before subsiding into peacefulness again. It is the first movement of the cantata 'Pictures of Night' (CE43) and it can stand on its own as a colourful concert item.
