Par ZAREBSKI JULISZ. Juliusz Zarebski (1854–1885) composed two concert mazurkas – Op. 8 and op. 15 – between 1880 and 1882. The adjective 'concert' (Mazurka de concert) accurately reflects their character and the creator's idea. These pieces take the form of loosely connected links, and in addition to the features typical of a mazurka, the virtuoso element comes to the fore. Against the background of mazurkas by Polish composers of the Romantic era, Zarebski's works occupy a separate place. They are actually in opposition to Chopin's understanding of this genre as an 'intimate diary'. The influence of Franz Liszt visible in them makes the mazurka melody and metrorhythmic patterns become the basis for an improvisational form. Zarebski's works are distinguished by their size, level of complexity and textural development. They are concert pieces par excellence, written by a virtuoso pianist.
