Leslie Betteridge has chosen to use the Sanctus from the Pater Cuncta Gregorian mass as the main theme for this set of variations. The majestic opening statement heralds the beginning of a dynamic and rhythmic crescendo which pervades the entire piece. Betteridge leaves no doubt that the subtext of this work is Sanctus! Sanctus! Sanctus!.
