The bright, syncopated organ part sets the scene for the joy at the birth of Jesus. The text mixes both Latin and English:On the birthday of the Lord, angel choirs with one accord sing in dulci jubilo, Gloria uni Deo! The mixed meter and sudden harmony changes will be a gratifying challenge for choirs. The lyrical third verse provides an effective contrast to the rest of the carol. This piece will delight choir and congregation alike.

David Halls' On the Birthday of the Lord lies somewhere between an anthem and an expanded carol setting, but it is much more accessible music.
