Based on the antiphon for the Burial Office, this moving work is chant-like in character. While the inner parts are scored with cluster chords in a gentle undulating rhythm, the chant tune is passed between the manuals and the pedals. The composer includes a triumphant middle section, and concludes with the unadorned chant line. In Paradisum appropriately retains the solemnity of a funeral, and is also suitable for a concert performance.
