Vincent Ho's standout work Nighthawks was originally written for cello and orchestra. Now it is available for recital performance as an arrangement for cello and piano. Nighthawks was written in homage to the renowned American painter Edward Hopper. In writing this work, Ho took instpiration from Hopper's painting of the same that depicts a solitary New York cafe at night. Ho's musical interpretation of Hopper's Nighthawks is highly captivating with his use of expressive glissandi, molto vibrato, trills and ricochets in the cello part. These effects come together in conveying a sense of loneliness and they evoke imagined environmental sound of the painting. The piano part is treated equally as expressive with quasi-improvised sections and rubato. It is a fantastic work for students from advanced undergraduate level looking to building their repertoire with a contemporary duo.
