Johann Sebastian Bach, in addition to writing many 4-part chorales in his cantatas and other sacred works, also harmonized many well-known hymns, which were undoubtedly used in his church services. His son, Carl Phillip Emmanuel, collected this chorales, discovering over three hundred among his father's works. The two chorales featured in this arrangement are Break Forth, O Beauteous Heav'nly Light and In Dulce Jublio. These two chorales teach students to pull the bow slower and to build musicality by following the dynamics and articulations. The chorales could be played in church by a small string ensemble, introducing string music to an entirely different audience. Your students will enhance their church services while broadening the orchestra's community support base. |
