La vie tumultueuse de cet illustre seducteur et erudit, represente par le violoncelle solo, est evoquee a travers huit tableaux. Les evenements relates se concentrent sur quelques-uns des plus palpitants episodes de la vie de Casanova : son arrestation, sa captivite et son evasion de la prison de Piombi.
