Recorded in 1953 on the Kenton Showcase album (This music is available from Mosaic Records in their Russo/Holman CD set.), this is a medium tempo swing chart which was (and still is) very different and fresh. There is no improvisation in it! It opens with unison trombones playing a simple melody, and then the different sections join in one at a time to create the many variations in the piece. Holman demonstrates his classical knowledge, but never at the expense of swinging. A wonderful chart! 5-5-5-4. |
